How a vintage trailer, a love of Mexico, and a lot of creativity came together to create a unique place to stay in Asheville.

The story starts in April 2020. On a drive through the mountains of Western North Carolina, Anna spotted a vintage Airstream parked in a campground with a “For Sale” sign in the window. She’d always thought Airstreams were the coolest things on the road - classic, iconic, full of possibility - and something just clicked. She knew she wanted this one.

It was the very beginning of the pandemic, when everything felt uncertain. Anna’s long-time boutique was shut down, unemployment payments were delayed, and no one knew what the next month would look like. The Airstream felt like both a creative project and a backup plan...somewhere she could live if she needed to. Buying it took courage, but it also felt like the right kind of hope.

How Frida Got Her Name

During that time, Anna found herself thinking often of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, someone she’s admired for years for her strength, grit, and vibrant spirit. Compared to what Kahlo endured, Anna knew her own challenges were small, but the reminder helped keep things in perspective.

She also loves the colors, warmth, and artistry of Mexico, so naming the Airstream “Frida” felt natural. The style followed: bright tiles, handcrafted touches, and a sense of playfulness and beauty inspired by Kahlo’s love of flowers, animals, and color.

A Two-Year Labor of Love

What Anna didn’t realize at first was just how much work the Airstream needed. It had to be completely gutted and rebuilt from the shell up. Over the next two years, three carpenters and a technician helped bring her vision to life. Bit by bit, Frida became the cozy, warm, beautifully crafted retreat she is today.

Get to Know Your Host

Anna has lived a big, colorful life. She grew up in Spain, Belgium, and England; became tri-lingual by age ten; and graduated from the University of Bristol. Later, she cooked and crewed on sailboats around the Mediterranean and Caribbean, then lived in Costa Rica for five years while traveling through Central America.

A twist of fate brought her to Western North Carolina, where she opened a women’s clothing boutique. The shop became a well-loved part of Downtown Asheville for 35 years. She sold it in 2024, just as Frida was finally ready to welcome guests.

Anna loves gardening, solving problems, and taking on projects with enthusiasm. She’s happiest when she’s outdoors, surrounded by color and life, with her terrier Riley tagging along.
